Stroker
A "Stroker" engine is one which uses an aftermarket, alternate-spec1 or modified crankshaft, connecting rods, and/or pistons to increase the stroke of the motor, which is the linear distance traveled by the pistons.
"Stroking" an engine increases the displacement. Most stroker engines use kits which contain components much stronger than stock, making the completed engine more durable as well as more powerful. It is common to raise the static compression of the engine through piston modification or replacement at the same time.
This modification is generally used only in larger engines, primarily larger V-6 and V-8s. In general, an engine with a long stroke (longer than the measurement of the cylinder bore, in particular) will gain more torque than horsepower (all other things being equal) because of the increased travel and reduced RPM range. It's seldom worth performing this modification on smaller engines due to increased vibration and the limited possible improvement in displacement.
