Cygwin provides a full POSIX version 2 emulation layer for Windows NT and Windows 9x. Windows NT features only a POSIX level 1 emulation system. Cygwin also provides a laundry list of programs and utilities which will permit you to treat Windows much like Unix including an ssh daemon, and the X.Org X server.
