  • 1985 Ford Thunderbird V6

(This car has long since been sold.)

I bought this car from my friend Charlie who had it for years and years. Before that, his mom had it for years, as well. That car in the background isn't mine, but it's a primer grey Camaro. It looks like an RS model or something, but I'm not sure.

This car has less problems than most of my previous acquisitions. So far:

  • AC Doesn't work. Reputed to work if charged.
  • Heater core is bad.
  • Catalytic converter rattles.
  • One of two muffler mounts is broken.
  • One dent on right side (picture below)
  • Two small rust patches at bottom right of rear window (also pictured below)
  • Shocks are hosed and in desperate need of replacement.
  • It's only a V6 with TBI.

The paint's coming up in that mid-late-eighties kind of way (environmental restrictions in many states necessitated the use of water-based enamels, which resulted in spotty paint and rust.)

This car has extremely slow takeoff, but it pulls pretty good for a largish sedan with a V6. If I had the option, I'd want to do the following things to the car: (Many of them more expensive than they're worth.)

  • Add a turbocharger. Nothing else can save a V6.
  • Put 17" wheels with super lo-pro tires on this thing.
  • Performance shocks. Even when this thing has had a new suspension, it was rubbery.
  • Paint it. Oh god, please let me paint this car.

All in all though, it's in pretty good shape. I was able to just get in it and drive it home.

I managed to snag the FAQ on the Aero T-Birds. It's right here for your enjoyment.

You can read more about T-Birds at The Thunderbird Cyber Nest.

There's also a thunderbird club that deals with all years of T-Bird. It's called the international T-Bird Club and its URL is http://intl-tbirdclub.com. Note however that their website provides no real service to the web at large. It also costs money to join, of course.

Bowen's Birds is one of the ugliest webpages I've ever seen. However, It deals with '83 through '88 T-Birds.
