A brief note on series hybrids with turbines

By drink | Thu July 01, 2010

It is often asserted that series hybrids are not as efficient as parallel hybrids (citation needed) but this is only because they are being built with inefficient reciprocating internal combustion engines. The obvious solution is to use microturbines.

Buy all your auto parts online

By drink | Wed February 13, 2008

This is not, repeat not an ad for any particular auto parts website. This is a condemnation of Kragen, Napa, and other such auto parts stores. Especially Napa because I extra-special hate them, but really, they all have to pay.

Electric Cars, Simplicity, and Recycling

By drink | Fri August 10, 2007

Today, parallel gasoline-hybrids are often touted as a cleaner, greener alternative despite the simple fact that avoiding purchasing a new car and sticking with your old one saves more energy and environmental impact in almost all cases. Rather than using the new technology to simplify the vehicle, hybrids are more complicated than their predecessors, and the results are not positive. The added weight of the electrical system means that the vehicle is either unusually heavy, or unusually expensive due to the necessity of balancing weight and crash safety. And the hybrid power system, most especially the batteries, comes at a substantial cost premium as well as substantially increasing environmental impact.

Cleaning a Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor

The Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF or MAFS) detects the amount of air flowing through the car's intake. It does this by measuring heat changes between a pair of "hot wire" sensors, by comparing current flow through them. It's perhaps not the method I'd have

1980 Yamaha Maxim 650

I gave this bike away to a friend of mine after getting it running. Kind of. It idled, anyway. This picture is of an '81 Maxim 650. My bike looked pretty much the same. This will have to do.

1980 Nissan 280ZX 2+2

I got this car by trading a powerbook (I think a 230c) for it. It had a tendency to exhibit electrical problems. I replaced the alternator twice and it still killed batteries, so I figure it had a short someplace. I had to continually charge my battery, and it managed to die at several inopportune times. It's hard to say in retrospect though.
